Is It Safe to Send Cremation Ashes in the Mail? A Guide for Australian Families

If you're considering having a piece of memorial jewellery made with the ashes of someone you love, one of the first things you may worry about is sending those ashes through the post.

And I completely understand why.

Cremation ashes aren't simply another item being mailed. They are precious, irreplaceable and deeply personal. For many families, even the thought of placing a small amount into an envelope and handing it over at the Post Office can feel incredibly daunting.

At Memories of You, I want you to feel comfortable with every part of the keepsake process — including getting your loved one's ashes safely to me.

The reassuring part is that you only need to send a very small amount, and by using a tracked service such as Australia Post Registered Post, your envelope can be tracked during its journey to me.

You don't send all of your loved one's ashes

This is perhaps the most important thing to know.

Please never send the entire quantity of cremation ashes you have.

I only require approximately ½ teaspoon of ashes to create your keepsake jewellery, and often only a small portion of this will ultimately be needed for your individual piece.

The remainder of your loved one's ashes can stay safely with you.

If you are understandably nervous about posting them, you can also choose to send only the small amount requested rather than anything more.

How should cremation ashes be packaged?

Before posting your ashes, they should be securely contained so that there is more than one barrier protecting them during transit.

I recommend placing the small quantity of ashes into a securely sealed small bag or container, clearly labelled with your name and order number.

That container should then be placed inside a second sealed bag before being placed into the mailing envelope.

This means that if the first container were somehow damaged or opened during its journey, there is still another layer protecting the contents.

Good packaging matters with anything travelling through the postal network. Australia Post similarly recommends appropriate packaging and securing items so they cannot move unnecessarily during transit.

Why I recommend Australia Post Registered Post

For something as emotionally significant as cremation ashes, I don't recommend simply placing them into an ordinary stamped envelope.

Instead, I recommend Australia Post Registered Post, lodged over the counter at your local Post Office.

Registered Post provides:

  • a unique identification number
  • proof of posting when lodged over the counter
  • tracking
  • Signature on Delivery
  • up to $100 compensation for loss or damage, with Extra Cover available in eligible circumstances.

Australia Post advises that Registered Post items receive tracking scans as they progress through its network, although the number of scans can vary depending on how and where an item is processed.

That tracking number is particularly important.

Rather than wondering whether your envelope has arrived, you can follow its journey and see when delivery has taken place.

Australia Post handles an enormous volume of mail every year

It can also help to put Australia's postal network into perspective.

During the 2024–25 financial year, Australia Post processed more than 2.2 billion items across Australia and delivered 514.3 million parcels.

Australia Post also reported meeting or exceeding all of its prescribed performance standards for the year.

Of course, no postal or courier service can honestly promise that an item could never be delayed, damaged or lost.

That's why I don't describe sending something as precious as ashes through the mail as being completely without risk.

Instead, we minimise that risk by sending only the small quantity required, packaging it carefully and using a service that provides tracking and proof of lodgement.

What happens when your ashes arrive at Memories of You?

The care doesn't stop once your envelope reaches me.

When your inclusions arrive, they are identified and handled as part of your individual order so that they can be used to create your chosen keepsake.

Your loved one's ashes are treated with the same respect I would want someone to show something precious belonging to my own family.

Only the amount required to create your stone is used. Any unused ashes are kept safely with your order and returned to you with your completed jewellery.

For me, this isn't simply a material used to make a piece of jewellery.

I know exactly what I'm being trusted with.

What if I still don't feel comfortable posting ashes?

That's completely understandable.

Some people are comfortable with Registered Post once they understand the process, while others simply aren't comfortable putting something irreplaceable into the postal system.

If you're local to Sunbury, Victoria, please contact me before ordering or sending your inclusions to discuss whether a local arrangement may be available.

There is never any pressure to send something you're uncomfortable posting.

A few simple precautions can make the process feel much less daunting

If you're preparing to send cremation ashes for your memorial jewellery, remember:

Send only the amount requested.
You do not need to part with all of your loved one's ashes.

Seal and double-package them.
This provides an additional layer of protection.

Clearly identify your inclusions.
Include your name and order number as instructed.

Use a tracked service.
I recommend Australia Post Registered Post rather than ordinary untracked mail.

Lodge it at the Post Office counter.
Australia Post states that proof of posting for Registered Post is provided when the item is lodged over the counter.

Keep your receipt and tracking number.
You can then follow the envelope's progress until delivery.

Your memories deserve to be handled with care

I understand that sending even half a teaspoon of someone's ashes can feel like an enormous act of trust.

That's why the process at Memories of You has been designed around care, traceability and respect — from the moment you prepare your inclusions to the moment your finished keepsake comes home.

Your memorial jewellery may contain only the smallest amount of ashes, but what those ashes represent is immeasurable.

Each piece is handcrafted with care in Australia to create something tangible you can hold onto — a quiet, lasting connection to someone who will always be part of your story.
